Discovering Chestnut Hill – The modern architectural treasures of Davidson Road Virtual Lecture

December 6, 2022 | 6:30 pm-7:30 pm

Architect and sculptor Oskar Stonorov was one of Chestnut Hill’s more important, but lesser-known, Modernist architects practicing during the 20th century. Join this Conservancy virtual lecture to better appreciate Stonorov and his designs. Known as a specialist in residential architecture, his works in the neighborhood include the Cherokee Apartments and a series of beautiful Modern houses on the adjacent Davidson Road. One of these Davidson Road projects was built as the home of celebrated landscape architect Ian McHarg, a frequent collaborator of Stonorov and other Modernist architects.

Several of Stonorov’s buildings have been lost, but the handsome houses he built to nestle into Davidson Road’s park-side landscape remain intact for now. William Whitaker, curator of the Architectural Archives at the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design, will lead the virtual lecture, sharing fascinating details about Stonorov and the built and unbuilt designs for Davidson Road houses.

In addition to our generous sponsors and supportive businesses, Discovering Chestnut Hill Tour and Lecture Series: The Modern Architectural Treasures of Davidson Road is sponsored by Docomomo.
