THE MEDINGER HOUSE
Medinger House Completely Demolished
In July 2018 we alerted you, and our friends at Springfield Township, to a demolition threat to the beloved and highly significant Medinger House at 8600 Montgomery Avenue in Wyndmoor. Unfortunately, although Christopher Colquitt of Alpha Real Estate Development had a permit only for an addition to the building, it was completely demolished in August. Springfield Township is reviewing what happened.
Springfield Township has no preservation ordinance, and lacks a good list of which resources are the most significant historically and architecturally. The Springfield Township Historical Society and Township leaders have long advocated addressing this, as more will be lost until the Township surveys its historic resources and creates an historic preservation ordinance with REAL preservation protections. Chestnut Hill Conservancy Executive Director Lori Salganicoff attended the September 4, 2018 Township Planning Commission meeting to encourage their work in this direction, and to offer help connecting to state funding and other resources.
Contact your Township Commissioner to urge them to protect and celebrate the Township’s heritage! We will post new information and updates on the Township Planning Commission’s progress as we have it.
